Is there really any difference between a cheap SLR Digital Camera and a good regular canon digital camera?

I have a Canon Powershot digital camera SD770 & I was looking into the SLRs.. I’m not a professional photographer, but I would like to step it up with photography… get my pictures more crisp, better quality, all the while using an easy camera..

So I was looking at the cheaper Nikons.. d40 or the d60…
are the pictures that come out of these cameras a lot better than a good digital camera like the one I have?

Any advice in general?

it depends on what sort of photos you take, or think you are going to take.
if you want a camera to take what some propel deride as “snaps”, eg holiday photos, family & friends and the like then I’d suggest a point and Shoot Camera ticks many boxes

if you want to take professional or semi professional photos then a digital SLR is probably the right way to go .

the dSLR’s allow you to change lenses, they have bigger sensors, more programs and manual modes. these mean you can take photos in trickier lighting conditions, trickier locations (eg yyou can swap lenses to get ‘that’ picture)

the point & shoot cameras are usually small, easy to carry around (so you have the camera with you, rather than lugging a gadget bag around.

sensor size isn’t that important, unless you want to enlarge your images over say a4/a3 size.. virtually any camera with a sensor over 5Mp will easily handle enlarging to over A4 (roughly 10″ x 8″)

As ever the quality of the image isn’t dependant on the device, its dependant on the vision of the photographer

If you really want to see the differences try to find some friends who have a point & shoot camera and a dSLR and do a comparative and see what works for you.

there is a huse prioce difference between point & shoot and dSLR’s (especailly if you start buying additional lenses for the dSLR.

Their is precious little difference between the variuos manufacturers dSLR’s at a similar price point. There may wel be some logic in buying, say, Nikon if you already have some Nikon Lenses in a cupboard somewhere. Or if you are going to go full time professional as you can get second hand lenses For Canon & Nikon, although if you are going professional why would you buy second hand and risk faults in the lens.

Unless you have lenses already I wouldn’t rule out ANY of the manufacturers, whether thats Canon, Nikon, Olympus, Pentax, Samsung, Sigma OR Sony.

you can get third party lenses for all lens types.

yes there is a bigger range of lenses with Canon & Nikon, but I doubt you as someone who is considering a point & shoot OR dSLR will notice. thats not a put down, its a statement that the range of lenses comes into play at the top end professional requirement.

Most of all go and make your own mind up as to what you want the camera for, and then decide on what camera to buy. Theres an awful lot of ill informed prejudice (ive bought Brand X, therefore Brand X MUST be the best). I’m biassed to Olympus, have used their cameras for years.

Bear in mind the ‘best’ camera is the camera you have to hand when you want to take ‘that’ picture. its no point having a dSLR if its in a bag, away in the house if the image is immediately before you, similarly theres no point having a point and shoot camera if you want to go and photograph at a sports venue unless you are close in.
