Max size of memory card I can use in Olympus Camedia C-50 Zoom Camera?
I have olympus camedia C-50 ZOOM camera obviously not an up to date camera! I bought a 2GB card some time ago and couldn’t get it to work, took it into a shop and was told it wouldn’t work (but can’t remember why?) I’m using 128MB cards at the moment but would like to use large Memory Cards if I can as this size is a little limiting. Camera came with a 16 MB card which isn’t off much use to anyone really. Can I use 256 or larger 1GB? None of the shops in the area are happy to open a pack for me to try the card only for me to tell them it don’t work. Does any one out there use one of these cameras and use larger memory cards?
With the original firmware you can use a 512mb standard xD card.
Olympus offer a firmware upgrade for the C-50 that will allow it to use 1gb xD cards in the standard, M and H types.
Sadly it’s a tricky firmware to install, not just a question of coupling the camera to a PC and downloading it, you need to access the service menu and hold a couple of buttons down whilst transferring a bin file from a specially formatted xD card, do it incorrcetly and you have an expensive paperweight.
As such only Olympus trained technicians are permitted to do it. Olympus UK offered the service for free, certainly up until March this year and Olympus America did it free if you supplied a proof of purchase for an Olympus xD card with the camera.
