I assume you’re talking about a small P&S camera (sure would help to mention such little details as model, don’t you think?)

Sounds like either it got turned on accidentally while it couldn’t extend the lens (i.e. in your purse/pocket), or it got dropped or bumped while the lens was out.

If a bit of gentle pushing and jiggling doesn’t fix it, you’ll need to get it repaired. Most repairs on small P&S’s cost more than a new camera would.
