Faster Than the Speed of Suck

Faster Than the Speed of Suck had to be a solo project for Asylum Street Spankers’ leader Wammo; it’s everything that his main band isn’t. Unlike his main outfit, which takes pride in remaining unplugged, this record is plugged in and tuned up, with the electric guitars, samplers, and other effects lying in stark contrast to the roots rock that Asylum Street Spankers take so much pride in. As the disc’s narrator intones at the onset, Faster Than the Speed of Suck is a concept album of sorts. The self-deprecating hero, Wammo, is making a journey from Texas to New Orleans in a borrowed, souped-up muscle car with a female companion of whom he has designs on. The disc follows their travels and travails on and off the interstate, with a focus on everyone’s dilemma on road trips, the radio. The way that Wammo satires the banality of radio circa 1999 (when the trip is purported to have taken place) will strike a chord with anyone who has had to make long hauls with the AM/FM dial as their only musical accompaniment: commercials are spoofed perfectly (the movie-commercial parody for “Dead Skaters Rule” is genius), as are the big-announcer voice assumed by so many jocks and silly station sloganeering (“You’re listening to K-R-A-C-K, You’re on KRACK! One hit and you’re hooked!”) and of course the banal pabulum that passes as music. That is also taken to task with hilarious effects: entire genres are raked over the coals, whether in the background as snippets that the two protagonists are arguing over keeping on or changing, or on original compositions that are as amusing as they are catchy and well-written. Sometimes Wammo apes a specific artist, sometimes a whole genre, sometimes both. While the surprise ending is a bit anti-climactic, Faster Than the Speed of Suck is clever, insightful, and still manages to kick ass, a triple crown as rare as finding a station two people can agree on for any length of time on a cross-country car expedition. ~ Brian O’Neill, Rovi Performers: Wammo – Chainsaw, Toy Drums, Trash Cans, Casio, Roland Synthesizer, Gong, Washboard, Whistle (Human), Drum Machine, Theremin, Rap, Harmonica, Vocals, Drums, Guitar; Brian Beattie – Shouts, Loops, Sampling, Voices, Accordion, Sound Effects, Vocals, Guitar, Bass, Keyboards, Synthesizer, Organ, Drums; Guy Forsyth – Slide Guitar; Anthony Nozero – Drums; Dale Allen – Lap Steel Guitar, Guitar; Joel Duhon – Drums; Mike Henry – Vocals;

Although she had earned worldwide fame in 1978 with “It’s a Heartache,” Bonnie Tyler had trouble building on that success looked as if she were doomed to one-hit wonder status by the early 1980s. However, she returned to prominence in 1983 with Faster Than Speed of the Night, a bombastic opus that took her gift for heartbroken balladry to epic heights. The key to the this album’s success is the production and writing chops of Jim Steinman. He applies the same gothic operatic touch that made his work with Meat Loaf so captivating (and successful), wrapping the songs in atmospheric, all-stops-out arrangements that blend drama and power chords in equal measure. The combination of Steinman’s cinematic production style with Tyler’s smoky vocals made Faster Than the Speed of Night her most successful album. It also spawned a huge hit single in “Total Eclipse of the Heart,” an epic ballad about longing for a lost love that starts as a quiet piano-led piece and builds into a gargantuan production built on an equal balance of power chords and thick choral vocals. The title track, a romantic rocker that blends lighting-fast piano runs with metallic guitar soloing from Rick Derringer, also got a decent amount of radio play. The remainder of the album has Tyler turning her attention to cover versions, including a Phil Spector-styled remake of Bryan Adams’ “Straight From the Heart” and a radically rearranged version of “Have You Ever Seen the Rain?” that transforms the song into an arena rock tune built on a complex, classical-styled piano riff from Roy Bittan. The standout among the cover versions is “Tears,” a heart-tugging power ballad that Tyler performs as a duet with its author, Frankie Miller. Since Miller’s gruff voice is close in style to Tyler’s, their duet has a special chemistry and they milk the song for every drop of drama it has to offer. This combination of bombast and melodrama could have worn thin quickly, but Steinman keeps things moving smoothly by carefully pacing all the songs and throwing in odd, ear-catching elements to keep things interesting (example: the chanting children’s chorus that introduces “Goin’ Through the Motions”). All in all, Faster Than Speed of the Night remains Bonnie Tyler’s finest and most consistent achievement on record. It’s a must for anyone interested in her work and a worthwhile purchase for anyone who enjoys rock at its most melodramatic. ~ Donald A. Guarisco, Rovi Performers: Bonnie Tyler – Vocals; Brian Pew – Vocals; Dave Lebolt – Synthesizer; David Varga – Vocals; Edward Skylar – Vocals;

Mars Bonfire’s late-’60s material occasionally bears some resemblance to Steppenwolf, particularly in the use of heavy organs. But in fact this is certainly on the lighter and more pop-flecked side than Steppenwolf, which might both disappointment Steppenwolf fans who seek this out on the basis of the “Born to Be Wild” connection, and make this LP a rather pleasant surprise to those fearing bombastic late-’60s hard rock on the order of Steppenwolf’s less impressive aspects. There is a version of “Born to Be Wild” here that is far tamer and less effective than Steppenwolf’s hit cover. Yet on about half the album Bonfire favors a pretty airy pop-psychedelic approach (reminiscent of his “Tomorrow’s Ship” composition on the single for pre-Steppenwolf outfit the Sparrow, written under his real name of Dennis Edmonton) to both his songwriting and arrangements. Bonfire has a thin, crackly voice that lacks force and precluded any significant success as a solo singer and band frontman, but does have a sincere and likable quality in spite of its limitations. “Lady Moon Walker” in particular is an overlooked psych-pop gem, with Bonfire’s best deployment of attractive melodies, spacy lyrics, and pleasing keyboard textures. “In Christina’s Arms” and “Sad Eyes” are also neat-o tender love songs with just enough unexpected melodic changes and oh-so-slightly trippy lyrics to make them more intriguing than the usual decent late-’60s pop/rock tune. When Bonfire tries to rock harder and get a little bluesy, the music becomes undistinguished, and sometimes downright boring. The good half of the album make this a worthwhile find, though, and it’s worthy of CD reissue (along with “Little Girl Lost” and “Time to Fly,” non-LP cuts from the era). Sure it’s obscure, but that hasn’t stopped Columbia from reissuing lots of other commercially unsuccessful ’60s stiffs from its vaults. ~ Richie Unterberger, Rovi Performers: Joe Foster – Synthesizer; Norman Blake – Synthesizer
