The cheap Nikon Camera is a well-designed and chic camera. I carry it everywhere I go, snapping photos as I go along. Friends, family, places I’ve visited and special times I’ve experienced are all captured by my camera’s lens.

Getting my first camera is a particular recollection in itself. It was a present from “Santa” for my 10th Christmas. Oh the invigorating bliss of being able to immortalize images on film! As a youth who moved a lot, it was terrific to find that my memories could now go with me.

My father is one of 6 kids; his father is one of 13 and his mother had 9 brothers and sisters. My dad’s first cousins alone numbered almost 100. And I have pictures — of my grandmother, aunts and uncles, of first cousins, second cousins and once-removed, of christenings, birthdays, graduations, weddings and huge family reunions. And all those pictures of all those relations have come with me throughout my life.

When I was younger we moved around the country and even to Europe for a while, and I became an avid photographer. There are scrapbooks filled with photos of my mom and dad, my brother and me, standing close to prominent and little known landmarks throughout the country. In Europe my camera came with me everywhere my passport took me, documenting my travels.

After photography became a digital process, all of a sudden my camera wasn’t just for printed photos any more. I loved how easy it was now to give pictures — with no visit to the post office. Since all my friends are on email I could launch pictures instantly anyplace in the world. And cropping no longer had to be completed in the darkroom! It was awesome to have lots of “special effects” at my fingertips from my laptop!

Life is different; I’m no longer a kid, moving around with my parents, but I have kids of my own. My pictures are still concerning recording our lives, though. Now my camera records my growing family, our forever friends, and more family vacations. And don’t forget all those birthdays, holidays, graduations, and weddings.

The people I consider family now includes those that are not connected to me by blood or marriage, but have formed such close ties that we consider each other family. Taking photos has become the process for me to stay connected with my kids and all the people I love.

I have a colleague who recently requested my advice when getting a camera. It’s tough to choose a preferred camera after all my years of photography, but I would have to say it’s this camera. When I reflect on the reminiscences it records — my life summed up in pictures — that’s a lot to measure up to.
